Lesson 4. The Send-away

A lovely opportunity to introduce the concept of send-aways presents itself to you every mealtime. Many obedience training books recommend teaching the puppy to focus ahead to the dinner bowl (nice application for wait training) and to go to the bowl on command and/or signal. This step can be begun while the puppy is quite young. It is easier to do jump send-aways with pups who understand signals already and who have a bit of mental maturity, so this is for older puppies who need another complication after learning about the signal exercises in Lesson 3.

Because this is a new twist, don’t just pick up where you left off on the signal work! Step 1 of the send-away might look like this: stand beside your puppy, with a target set a few feet in front of you, and send him ahead with a strong signal just as you sent him to the side when he was first learning. Though this seems easier than the dinnertime send-away your pup already knows, the change of context makes it a good place to start. Naturally, increase the distance gradually and change the variables, as with the signal work. Add a ground pole, then another, to the send-away. If you’ve done your homework and not rushed your puppy’s training, this is really going to be fun. To see adolescent puppies begin to combine mental and physical coordination skills with teamwork is exciting and rewarding. Remember to keep each session short.
